KNPB Channel 5, the PBS Station serving the
Reno Nevada DMA, and Digital System Technology (DST),
KNPB’s systems integrator, have selected Crispin’s System
2000 as their broadcast automation of choice.
“After a thorough evaluation of all the
automation companies in the marketplace, Crispin was chosen because
of their advanced technology, flexible and modular approach, and
extreme reliability,” commented Fred Ihlow, Chief Technologist,
KNPB. “Crispin was clearly the best choice to provide us with an
automation solution to address our current and future needs for
growth.”
KNPB, the first station in the Reno market to convert to
HDTV, is using Crispin’s automation systems for complete control
of the station’s on-air playback, and to create automatic
operation of content record and playback. The Crispin System will
consist of three separate rack-mounted workstations, communicating
via LAN. Crispin’s RapidPlayX 2000 will be the main
workstation to provide on-air playback control. RapidPlayX 2000
is the front end for Crispin’s scalable full automation on-air
playback solution providing full control of automated playback for
commercial, programming, and news playback environments. Proven
reliability and extreme flexibility, RapidPlayX is capable of
controlling a single channel to up to 16 channels simultaneously
enabling KNPB to expand their channel playout in the HDTV future.
KNPB will also be able to GPI trigger events with Crispin’s
SmartWedge from this workstation.
Total Device Control is completed with Crispin’s DeviceServer.
Crispin’s DeviceServer offers real-time control of the
Omneon Video Server. The Crispin DeviceServer has been
designed around a standard “device template”. Each device has a
unique DLL, which contains all the control information for that
device. This allows KNPB the ability to grow their system as they
need to with Crispin’s rapid interfacing to new devices.
The KNPB Dub station will be using Crispin’s Dubber 2000 and
RecordScheduler for media ingest into the Omneon Video Servers
and the automatic recording of commercial and programming materials.
DubberAssist will be used to create automatic dub and kill
lists in RapidPlayX for the Video Server content management. Cache
Dub Lists allow the station to Drag & Drop the clip information
into Dubber exactly as created by Traffic. This eliminates costly
mistakes in dubbing.
KNPB will use Crispin’s Mapper for conversion of their
ProTrack traffic playlist into an automated Playlist to air in RapidPlayX.
Crispin’s AsRun will provide fully automated
reconciliation, enabling "as run" logs of all programming
and underwriter spots to be automatically reconciled against the
original schedule, significantly decreasing manual operations.
Secondary events can be invoked directly from the ProTrack
interface. Traffic coordinators can embed specific commands to
automation for such things as voice-overs, squeeze-backs, bug
insertions, branding, and auto-tags within the traffic log.
